Happy Friday, and happy First Friday if you're anywhere near downtown Auburn tonight!

The weather this week was unseasonably beautiful in Central New York and I definitely tried to make the most of it with lots of “extended” walks with my dogs. Side note! For the first time in 34 dispatches, I’m trying a different thumbnail. Peep it on the website and tell me what you think!

In this Middle of Somewhere, you'll find:

  • Tonight: First Friday in downtown Auburn

  • New on the blog: Places to Christmas Shop in Skaneateles

  • Want your shop in the Holiday Guide? (One week left)

  • On the calendar (the next two weeks)

  • A small request

Thanks for sharing the love of CNY with me!

Tonight: First Friday in Downtown Auburn

Fifteen downtown spots are open late tonight with live music, tastings, deals, and a couple of talks worth planning around. See them all here.

These are my picks 👇

  • Cellar & Folly Whiskey Co. (4-10 p.m.) — $1 off whiskey cocktails, and a free cocktail when you buy a bottle.

  • Cayuga Museum of History & Art (4:30-6:30 p.m.) — The new exhibit "What's in a Name? Why We Collect Signatures," with a hammer dulcimer ensemble 5-6:30. Then 7-9 p.m., Pulitzer Prize-winning author Dr. Edda Fields-Black talks about Harriet Tubman's role in the Civil War (ticketed).

  • NYS Equal Rights Heritage Center (5-7 p.m.) — A screening of Linda Moroney's film "Gone & Done It," shot inside Susan B. Anthony's home, followed by a talk with Dia Carabajal on civic engagement.

  • Seward House Museum (5-7 p.m.) — Free refreshments, the museum exhibits, and a gift shop art show by Southern Cayuga Jr/Sr High studio art students.

New on the blog: Places to Christmas Shop in Skaneateles

Places to Christmas Shop in Skaneateles

Skaneateles has that old money, walked-into-a-Hallmark-movie feel, which makes it a dangerously good place to Christmas shop. I rounded up everywhere I'd shop and eat on a Dickens weekend (or any weekend), from DROOZ & Company and Hobby House Toys to the patch bar at Pink Bronco and two stops for the dogs on your list.

Good to know: Dickens Christmas runs weekends Nov. 27-Dec. 20, noon-4 p.m.

ATTN Business Owners: Want your shop in the Holiday Guide?

I’m building the MoS Central NY Holiday Guide, a roundup of local businesses I’d send my friends to this season. If you own a shop, own a bar/restaurant, make things or run a spot people should know about, I’d love to include you.

One week left: the deadline to join is next Friday, November 13.

In the guide (so far) we have trail cameras, a psychic, and textile art!
